Mutations / Créations

The Centre Pompidou presents a new event, "Mutations / Créations" (Innovations/Creations), resolutely focused on the potential and interaction of digital technologies with creation; a terrain shared by art, innovation, and science.

Transversal, an intersection of disciplines, of science, engineering, and the arts, this annual event convenes music, design, and architecture for its first edition. This year, it offers two exhibitions ("Imprimer le mode" [Printing the World] and Ross Lovegrove), the "Vertigo" forum on art and innovation, as well as study days and workshops.

Every year, large thematic and monographic exhibitions will be articulated with a program of encounters and workshops that will transform the Centre Pompidou into an incubator bubbling with ideas, a place full of prototype demonstrations, artistic experiments in vivo, and exchanges with creators. This new platform of events is designed as a critical observatory and tool to analyze the impact of creation on society. How have creative fields used digital technologies to open new industrial perspectives? How do they question the social, economic effects, the ethical limits of these industrial developments?

This new multidisciplinary platform will set out the issues concerning the formal mutations in the domains of music, art, design, and architecture in view of techoscience advances.

Vertigo, the art innovation forum

Vertigo, the new international art-innovation forum, presents multidisciplinary events on creation and innovation in music, art, design, and architecture in connection with digital technologies. This new rendezvous brings together the leading players in the “sensitive” and the “intelligible”, desire and astonishment: artists, engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs who change and defy our present.

In a world turned upside down by technologies and its uses, in our forward-looking society, the Forum “exposes” and shares new objects and new artistic fictions, the design of rupture, innovative logics for design and production found in both the workshop and the laboratory. An effect of rapprochement among several disciplines and cultures that generally ignore one another, a “vertigo” effect (zooming forward while pulling the camera back) on our own world… These meetings will include demonstrations of prototypes, critical or epistemological keynote speeches, panel discussions, and presentations of artistic experiences in association with engineering and scientific research.

For this first edition, Vertigo will focus on “Simulated Space and Digital Forms”.

What are the issues surrounding the formal mutations at the heart a digitalized world in the fields of music, art, design, architecture, and film in terms of advances in techno-science? The development of computer science brought about radical transformations that shook up the practice of architects, designers, and artists. Today, the process of digital simulation concerns all these domains: digital simulations of land, 3D simulation of visual space, sound spatialization. Be it sound, computer-generated images, or the production of material objects, digital space generates new forms that raise multiple questions. Artistic practices meet the ecosystem of fablabs and makers; “digital makers” are at the heart of a new collaborative economy in which the very role of the creator is modified. The designer imagines new protocols of sharing with users who can intervene in the digital file on sharing platforms in the framework of open innovation.
